Rendever: Opening New Doors for Aged Care Through Virtual Reality

General Interest

Generus Living has been named a finalist for the prestigious 2024 Aged Care Association/ EBOS Healthcare Excellence in Care Awards - Innovative Delivery category. This recognition highlights Generus Living’s commitment to advancing aged care through groundbreaking innovations like Rendever, a virtual reality (VR) technology designed specifically for  the aged care industry.

Generus Living is the first to introduce Rendever in a New Zealand aged care setting, purposefully integrating this technology into their care programmes to dynamically enhance residents’ wellbeing. The results have been remarkable. Recently highlighted on the popular TV programme Seven Sharp, the feature showcased how Rendever is transforming life at Generus Living care centres, allowing residents to experience the world in entirely new ways. It offers a unique way for residents to relive cherished memories, explore new destinations, and engage with loved ones, all from the safety and comfort of their care centres. The filming took place at The Russley Village Ashley Care Suites in Christchurch.

Virtual tours of landmarks like the Eiffel Tower and the Great Barrier Reef bring the world   to residents, offering mental stimulation and social engagement. Rendever has proven effective for those facing physical or cognitive challenges. A recent pilot at The Russley Village showed that 78% of participants reported improved moods, with many expressing joy and excitement about their virtual adventures.

Residents have embraced the user friendly Rendever, integrating it seamlessly into daily activities. Whether revisiting cherished destinations or attending family events through 360-degree videos, the technology fosters reminiscence and conversation, helping to combat loneliness and enhance social connections.

The success of the Rendever pilot at The Russley Village led to its adoption across all Generus Living care centres in New Zealand, including Holly Lea Care Centre, Pacific Coast Te Manaaki Care Centre, and Ranfurly Hospital. Family members, too, are excited about the ability to share personalised content with their loved ones, further enhancing the emotional and social connections that Rendever fosters.

Generus Living’s Director, Graham Wilkinson, emphasises the importance of partnering with the best in the industry, and Rendever’s evidence-based approach, along with its ability to personalise VR experiences, stood out. Generus Living is committed to building connected, vibrant communities for its residents, and Rendever is a key part of this mission. With this innovative technology, seniors can continue to explore the world, foster social bonds, and enhance their emotional wellbeing—proving that the opportunity for adventure and connection never truly ends.
